High Intensity Interval Training

High Intensity Interval Training

Can you HIIT it?!

If we told you that there was a workout that promised to quickly improve your overall fitness, burn heaps of calories and fat but you would spend less time working out – you would be forgiven for thinking that we had lost our minds!
But before you write us off as insane consider this…HIIT!
HIIT is the new buzz word in the fitness world.  If you are not familiar with the terminology and have no idea what HIIT stands for then allow us to enlighten you! HIIT is an abbreviation for High Intensity Interval Training.

But what is HIIT?

HIIT is a way of training that alternates between intense bursts of exercises and short periods of rest and/or less intense activity.
But is what it promises too good to be true? Well it is and it isn’t! You may get away with spending LESS time working out, but the workout you complete will be harder, faster and way more intense than you are used to!  The trade-off is this format of exercising gives regular exercisers a new challenging way to work-out and new exercisers the ‘much sought after’ quick results.

How does it work?

HIIT conditions both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems.  Most people train their aerobic system every time they train.  You train aerobically when you are working out at a level that you can still hold a conversation – your body is able to take in as much oxygen as it requires and pump that oxygen to your muscles so you are able to maintain that level of activity for a longer period of time.  When you work out anaerobically (without oxygen) you cannot maintain that level of activity for very long.  And this anaerobic system is the foundation of HIIT!
The beauty of HIIT is it will push you into your anaerobic training zone and keep you there for a short period of time, working you to your maximum.  You are able to maintain this with the promise of a rest/recovery period at the end of the exercise/track!

Who can do HIIT?

HIIT is designed for people who have limited time to spare but want to boost overall cardiovascular fitness, endurance and fat loss – however HIIT can be incorporated into anyone’s workout.  It can be physically demanding so you have to be in good health before you start, but once you get started there will be no stopping you!
More sessions does not mean more benefits, so limit yourself to 3 HIIT sessions per week with at least 1 day between for recovery.

HIIT @ The Gym

We have recently launched the Les Mills Grit Series, which has 3 options:

  • Grit Strength: Builds strength and lean muscle

Works all major muscle groups.
Sends your metabolism into overdrive and leaves you burning fat for hours after the workout ends.
Stimulates the production of growth hormones which reduce fat and help to develop lean muscle.

  • Grit Cardio: Burns fat and rapidly improves athletic capability

An explosive high-impact body weight-based workout.
Provides the double whammy of maximising calorie burn within the workout and burning fat for hours afterwards.

  • Grit Plyo: Creates a powerful, agile and athletic body

Incorporates the principles of plyometric training to build power and increase speed and leg strength.
Uses power agility training to transform type two muscle fibres and produce a lean athletic shape.
Intensifies energy and increases muscular endurance and stamina.

An alternative to the Grit Series is our new High Performance Arena (HPA).  Within the 4 walls of our Arena your body and mind will be challenged and pushed into a new level of HIIT training by our Enforcers! You will leave feeling exhilarated and exhausted…we can’t promise it is easy but we can promise it is worth it!

Classes are small and places are limited so you have to book a place fast!
